イギリスの方言

イギリス各地は古代から、イギリスの国人はもちろん、現在のイタリア、ドイツやノルウェーなどの国々に侵攻され、征服を受けてきました。

そのため、現在でもよく使われている方言がたくさんあります。実は、いわゆる「イギリス英語の発音」は、人口のごく一部の人々しか話していません！

イギリスを旅行すれば、この方言の違いは挨拶から簡単に分かります。「Hello」や「Hi」などの言葉はどこでも使われていますが、場所をおよそ40キロメートル移動するだけで、明白に違うなまりが聞こえると言われています。あるいは、5キロ離れた場所でも人の話し方に大きな差があります！

イングランドの南西に位置する「コーンウォール」では、挨拶として「Wosson」（発音は[ウォッソーン]）という言葉を使う人がいますが、東北の方では「Ey up」（エイ・オップ）、または「Ey up, duck」（エイ・オップ・ダック）という挨拶があります。Ey upは古ノルド語にあたり「注意！」を意味する「Se upp」という言葉から由来し、9世紀にバイキングがイギリスを侵攻した時から残っています。

一方、スコットランド、ウェールズと北アイルランドそれぞれでは、「Fit like?」（フィット・ライク？）、「S’mae」（シュマイ）、と「What’s the craic」（ワッツ・ザ・クラック？）といった挨拶があります。

日本国内でも言語に違いがあることはずっと前から気になっており、日本で行ったことのない場所へ旅行をするときは、方言を聞くために耳を澄ませてみようと思います。

Since ancient times, different parts of the UK have been ruled over by various different powers, from the indigenous peoples of the islands to invaders from modern day Italy, Germany, and Norway.

As a result, there are a huge number of different dialects across the country, many of which are still spoken frequently today; the typical ‘English accent’ is actually only spoken by a very small proportion of the population!

If you travel across the UK, the easiest way to hear these regional differences are in how people greet each other. While words like ‘hello’ or ‘hi’ are used everywhere, it is estimated that you only need to travel around 40 kilometres in the UK to hear a noticeably different accent. In some cases, you can hear significant changes even within 5 kilometres!

In Cornwall, in the southwest of England, you might hear people greet each other with the word ‘wosson’ (pronounced ‘woss-own’), whereas towards the northeast, you will hear people use ‘ey up’, or ‘ey up, duck’. Ey up actually comes from the Old Norse language ‘Se Upp’ meaning ‘watch out’; stemming from when Vikings invaded and settled in England in the mid-9th century. 

Meanwhile in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland respectively, you will hear greetings such as ‘Fit like?’, ‘S’mae’, and ‘What’s the craic?’. 

These differences in language within a country have always fascinated me, and it’s something that I keep an ear out for in Japan whenever I visit a new area, too!
