でか山

皆さんご存じのとおり、ゴールデンウィークに開催した青柏祭で巨大な山車がまちを彩り、太鼓と笛の音が道に響いていました。私は地域の方からのお誘いで、鍛冶町の若衆に入らせていただき、3日間の祭りを通して、山車の運行に加わりました。

2025年8月に、西湊地区の夏祭りで1日中屋台をやりましたが、青柏祭のような祭に参加したことがなく、最終日は「まんでたいそい！」でしたが、心に残る体験となりました。

日本と比べたら、イギリスは祭が少ないですが、全然ないと言うわけではありません。イギリスで世界各地から人が集まり、生活しますので、ブラジルのカーニバルやインドのホーリーといった行事をはじめとし、1年間に様々な祭が開催されます。

でか山のような大きなものが運行することは滅多にありませんが、でか山を見たら、イギリスの南に位置するルイスという町で行われる行事が思い浮かびます。

11月5日、イギリス人が祝うボーンファイアナイト（たき火ナイト）、またはガイ・フォークス・ナイトと呼ばれた行事で、非常に大きいたき火と人形が燃やされたり、打ち上げた花火が夜空を照らしたりします。ルイスのボーンファイアナイトは地域から様々な協会がルイスに集まり、パレードを行います。そこでは、観光客を含め、約85,000人が参加するそうです。

でか山と同じ、ルイスの行事でも特に大きい移動物が特徴です。ところが、ルイスの人形は毎年燃やされるので、デザインも毎回完全に変わります。

普段は、燃やす人形は世論不良な政治家など、当時物議を醸した人物を題材に作られています。例えば、2015年に、汚職問題で非難されたフィファ会長セップ・ブラッターの形をした人形が、当時の大統領デーヴィッド・キャメロンみたいな人形と共に燃やされました。

私にとってでか山の最もいいところは、皆さんが綱を握り、一緒に山車を引っ張るところでした。市民のみなさん一人一人が祭に欠かせない存在だという気がしました。こういう気持ちがイギリスの行事にも感じられたらいいと思います！

　As I am sure you are aware, during golden week, the Seihakusai festival saw enormous floats, known as Dekayama fill the streets with colour and sound, as the drums and whistles echoed along their journey. I was lucky enough to take part in the festival, joining Kajimachi’s Wakaishuu and helping to parade the float across all 3 days.

While I spent the day back in August 2025 helping at a stall in Nishi Minato’s Summer Festival, I had never taken part in a festival quite like Seihakusai, and it was a truly special, if exhausting experience. 

In the UK, we don’t have anywhere near as many festivals as you can find in Japan, however that is not to say that we have none at all. As a country with people from all over the world, various festivals are held all year round, from Brazilian carnivals, to Holi and other Indian celebrations. Large floats like the Dekayama are rare, however it does remind me of one British festival held in Lewes in the south of England.

On the 5th of November, Brits celebrate Bonfire Night, also known as Guy Fawkes Night, where large bonfires and effigies are burned, and fireworks displays illuminate the night sky. Lewes hosts a particularly special celebration, as various societies from the surrounding area all hold parades on the same day, meaning the festival regularly attracts over 85000 people. Like the Dekayama during Seihakusai, large floats are also a feature of the Lewes bonfire celebrations. However, unlike Dekayama, the floats are all designed to be burned, and so are completely different every year.

Normally, the floats are depictions of particularly controversial figures, such as unpopular politicians. For example, in 2015, an effigy of the President of FIFA Sepp Blatter, who at the time was going through a large corruption scandal, was burned along with another of the sitting Prime Minister David Cameron. 

My favourite part of Dekayama was seeing all the people from the crowd helping to pull the floats along the streets. It really made it feel like the community was an important part of the celebration, and I would love it if a similar community spirit found its way into British festivals more often!
