Cheese Rolling

イギリスは、日本と同じく数千年の歴史を持つ島国です。この長い歴史を通じて、日本には面白くて不思議な文化が数多く残されているのではないでしょうか。イギリスも同様で、今でも様々な変わった伝統行事などが行われています。
その一つが、毎年5月にイングランド西部のクーパーズ・ヒル（クーパーズ丘）で行われる「チーズローリング」です。参加者が重さ3~4kgの「ダブルグロスター」というホイールチーズを追いかけて、丘を駆け下りる競技で、勝者はそのチーズを賞品として手に入れることができます。現在では、カナダ、エジプト、オーストラリアなど世界中から参加者が集まるほど有名なイベントとなっています。しかし、小さな村で開催されるため、約5千人の観客しか収容できませんが、にもかかわらず、過去には1万5千人もの観客が訪れたこともあります。
クーパーズ・ヒルは全長約200m、約27度の傾斜の凸凹した斜面を下るため、毎年多くの参加者が転んで、重傷を負うこともあります。2023年には、カナダ人の参加者が意識を失った状態でゴールラインを通過してレースに勝利しましたが、後に医療エリアで意識を取り戻してから優勝を知ったという出来事がありました。

　The UK, like Japan, is an island nation with a history going back thousands of years. It is safe to say that in the course of its long history, Japan has created a number of traditions that, even to Japanese people, are considered a little strange. The UK is no different, and many weird and wonderful cultural oddities are widely celebrated today.

　One such example is an event held in May every year at Cooper’s Hill, in the west of England. Known as ‘Cheese rolling’, this event sees competitors chase a 3 or 4 kilogram wheel of Double Gloucester cheese down a hill, with the winner of the race receiving the cheese as a prize. While the exact start date of the tradition is unknown, it is thought to be over 600 years old, and possibly linked to a pagan festival to celebrate the start of spring. The race become world famous, attracting competitors from Canada, Egypt, and Australia to name a few, however, as it takes place on a small hill, there is only space for around 5000 spectators, although some years as many as 15000 people have gathered to watch.

　The race is classed as an extreme sport as the slope is very steep and uneven (about 27 degrees) and almost 200 meters long, so every year a number of people fall and are injured, often seriously. For example, in 2023, a woman from Canada won the race despite crossing the finish line while unconscious, only learning she had won later in the medical enclosure.
