海岸での遊び

夏が近づいて気温がどんどん上がってくると、私はいつも暑さをしのぐために海で泳ぎたくなります。能登地方は半島なので、近くに行けるビーチがたくさんあるのだろうと思っていました。ところが、同僚におすすめの海水浴場を聞いてみたところ、まだどのビーチも一般には開放されていないと知って、とても驚きました。海開きというものをそれまで聞いたことがなく、日本に来てからも海に行ったのは一度だけです。

実際、私が日本の海について知っていた知識といえば、スイカ割りや砂浜での焚き火の動画くらいでした。

日本ではビーチは夏の短い期間だけ、公式に遊泳が許可されると知り、少し慌てて調べてみました。というのも、私は1月に鎌倉へサーフィンをしに行っていて、ビーチが閉鎖されていた可能性をまったく考えていなかったからです。幸いなことに、知らないうちに何か違法なことをしてしまっていたわけではなさそうでした。

イギリスのビーチが閉鎖されることはほとんどありません（ただし安全上の理由で沿岸警備隊が立ち入りを制限することはあります）。人々はウェットスーツの有無にかかわらず、一年中海で泳ぎます。特に、平均水温が6〜10℃ほどになる元旦の海へ入ることも人気の習慣で、その時期に冷たい海に入って寄付や支援を集めるチャリティーイベントもよく行われています。

秋から冬にかけて海水はかなり冷たくなりますが、夏になると水温はずっと快適なレベルまで上がり、イギリスの家族にとってビーチでの休暇はとても人気があります。特にイングランド南西部のコーンウォールは、美しいビーチと、イギリスらしくないほど良い天気で有名です。地域によっては自然にヤシの木が育つ場所があり、それを見るたびにまるで別の国に来たような気分になります。

コーンウォールはサーフィンの名所でもあり、アイスクリームの品質の高さでも知られています。そのため、夏休みの時期には国内中から人々が集まり、太陽の下でアイスクリームを楽しみながらビーチは大変な賑わいになります。日本で私が一番好きなアイスはパリパリサンドなので、暑いビーチに座ってそれを食べてから海に入るのが今から楽しみです。
 

As summer approaches and the weather starts getting hotter, I always find myself wanting to go for a swim in the sea to cool off. As Noto is a peninsula, I had assumed there would be plenty of local beaches around to visit. However, when I asked my coworker if they had any recommendations, I was very surprised to learn that the beaches were not open to the public yet! I had never heard of Umibiraki before and have only been to a beach in Japan once so far during my time here. In fact, my knowledge of the Japanese seaside was limited to videos of watermelons being hit with sticks, and bonfires on the sand. 

Upon learning that beaches in Japan are only officially open to swimming for a short time each summer, I quickly did some panicked research, as I had gone to Kamakura in January to go surfing, and had never even considered that the beach might have been closed. Luckily it seems I didn’t inadvertently do anything illegal! 

In the UK, beaches are never really considered closed (although sometimes the coast guard can close them for safety reasons), and people go swimming in the sea, both with and without a wetsuit, all year round. It is even a popular custom to take a dip in the sea on New Year’s Day, often to raise money for charity, when the average temperature of the water is around 6-10 °C.

Although the sea gets very cold during autumn and winter, in summer the water rises to a much more comfortable temperature, and beach holidays are very popular amongst British families. In particular, Cornwall in the south-west of England is famous for its beautiful beaches and uncharacteristically nice weather. There are even palm trees that grow naturally in some parts of the county. Every time I see them it feels like I’ve travelled to a different country!

Cornwall is also a great area for surfing and is famed for the quality of its ice cream, which means that during summer holidays, the beaches are absolutely packed with people from all over the country enjoying the sunshine with an ice cream. My favourite ice cream in Japan is a paripari sando, so I can’t wait to be sat on a warm beach enjoying one before going swimming!
