Summer fairs in the UK

イギリスの田舎には村や里が一万以上あり、2024年には、それらの小さい町に住んでいる人は約1,000万人と推計され、イギリスの総人口の7分の1を占めました。僕は今まで、人生のほとんどをこのようなコミュニティで暮らしてきました。住んでいた場所を考えると、いい思い出がたくさんありますが、何と言っても、その中で一番楽しい思い出は夏に行われる「ヴィレッジフェア」という村の祭りです。

フェアは「フェート」とも呼ばれ、この祭りは普段、1日もしくは2日間に渡って開催され、数々のゲームや競争があり、食べ物もたくさんあります。村役場、公園、村民の庭に地元の人々が集まり、日差しを楽しむきっかけとなっています。（イギリスは雨がよく降るので）イギリスの天気が許すなら！

ヴィレッジフェアでは、福引、スプラット・ザ・ラットやココナッツ・シャイといったゲームがよくあります。また、瓶の中に埋まったスイーツの数を数えるゲームやケーキの重さを最も正確に当てるゲームでは、正解するとそのスイーツやケーキが手に入れられることも特徴的です。それ以外に、フェアで売るために、ケーキやクッキーを作って持って行く人が多いです。ちょうどその頃、バーベキューのシーズン真っ盛りなので、ハンバーガーやホットドッグ、トウモロコシなどの大人気な売り物も必ず食べられます。

ヴィレッジフェアをやっている場所で暮らしていた時からもう数年たっていますが、七尾に来てから嬉しいことに、イギリスのフェアを思い出すような行事や祭に行ったり、参加したりしました。このごろ、さらに暑くなってきているので、日本での夏生活が楽しみです。
 

　The countryside in the UK is littered with thousands of villages, and in 2024, it was estimated that around 10 million people (about 14.5% of the population) lived in small rural communities. For most of my life, I have lived in these types of places. I have a lot of good memories about the places I have lived, but one of the best things always the summer village fair.

　Sometimes called fetes, these celebrations usually take place over one or two days, and include all sorts of games, competitions, and food. These fairs are a great opportunity for small communities to gather together and enjoy some sunshine (if the British weather allows), and usually take place in village halls, greens, or even sometimes just in peoples’ gardens! 

　Typical games include tombolas, splat-the-rat, and coconut shies, and usually a guessing-game where competitors can win a jar of sweets if they can most accurately guess the number of sweets inside, or a cake if they can guess its weight. Aside from cakes available as prizes, locals usually bake a variety of biscuits and cakes to sell at the fair. Around the same time, barbeque season is in full swing, so there is invariably a stall selling burgers, hotdogs, and other favourites like corn on the cob. 

　It has been quite a few years now since I last lived somewhere with a village fair, but since coming to Nanao I have been lucky enough to attend, and sometimes be a part of a few different festivals and events that really remind me of summer fairs back in the UK. With summer already well on its way, I’m looking forward to all the summer fun Japan has to offer.
